The Smiths, long time Madison residents, met as a two piano team while attending Northwestern University where Don was a dual journalism and musicology major and Janet earned a bachelor's degree in choral conducting and a master's in applied piano They have held church positions as organist and choir director. Don worked for many years in the record industry and both maintained a private piano studio. For several years he was Chorus Master of the Madison Opera. Janet also was a founding member of "Opera for the Young" presenting programs for school children throughout the state. Together they researched and presented five choral programs of music by Rossini, Schubert and Brahms and others.
